Modern Languages Mission Statement
The Modern Languages program aims to develop in students a greater intellectual curiosity and flexibility through acquiring knowledge of and appreciation for foreign cultures and their diversity. Communication, Cultures, Connections, Communities, and Comparisons-the five goal areas that underlie foreign language education-drive the Department’s programs.
Learning Outcomes
- Communicate effectively at an advanced level of proficiency (as described in the ACTFL Guidelines, https://www.actfl.org).
- Demonstrate an understanding of relevant aspects of high and popular culture in their original context.
- Make effective connections to additional areas of knowledge relevant to the use of foreign languages in other disciplines.
- Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of world communities.
- Compare and contrast their own language and culture to the target language and culture and demonstrate an understanding that there are multiple ways of viewing the world.

The Major in Spanish
The Major in Spanish requires 40 semester hours, comprising:
36 semester hours of Spanish courses numbered 201 or higher
Including:
- SPA 351 or SPA 352
- SPA 601
- At least 8 semester hours of 400-level coursework. At least one required 400-level Spanish course must be taken after returning from the international study experience (see Study Abroad below).
Study Abroad
Plus, an approved international study experience of at least ten weeks in a Spanish-speaking country.
Plus one of the following:
Secondary Education Certification in Spanish
If secondary education teacher certification in Spanish is desired, the major must include the following:
Students must also complete all the requirements for the Secondary Education Minor .
