Environmental Science Mission Statement
Consistent with the mission of Westminster College, the Environmental Science program seeks to develop an understanding of the complex interactions between humans and the natural world. Within a scientific context, the Environmental Science program broadens the students’ technical skills and literacy. An interdisciplinary approach is used to provide a foundation that students will use to identify, investigate and solve environmental problems that face humanity.
Learning Outcomes
- To demonstrate appropriate discipline-specific knowledge in the following general areas: Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Supporting Physical Science and Mathematics.
- To demonstrate relevant technical skills including laboratory methods, field work, research techniques, computing, and scientific literacy.
- To identify, analyze, and propose solutions to environmental problems and to consider those problems in their social context.
- To effectively communicate environmental issues from a scientific perspective to diverse audiences.
- To develop greater awareness of environmental issues on campus and with the local and regional communities and implement environmental practices in collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
This program, sponsored by the Center for the Environment, is composed of designated and elective courses from those disciplines, and environmental science. The purpose of the program is to provide the broad background and understanding necessary for effective work on problems of the environment and for careers in environmental science.

Due to the number of overlapping courses, students will not be allowed to double-major or complete a combined major in Environmental Studies and Environmental Science. Additionally, students will not be able to major in Environmental Science and minor in Environmental Studies.
